Back to Rumor Control

Did DeSantis cancel the election in flooded Florida counties? No.

The rumor is False

Polling places and safety Florida

“Florida's flood emergency canceled the election and sent the National Guard to polling places.”

The fact

Florida's flood emergency did not cancel or delay the Nov. 3 election.

Executive Order 26-227, signed Nov. 2 for Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties, does not suspend or delay voting, though state law would let the governor do that by order. The order activates the National Guard as needed for the flood and says nothing about sending it to polling places. Polling places can still move: in an emergency, state law has the county supervisor name a new site and post a notice at the old one, and the order sends any supervisor who cannot fully comply to the state for approval of a substitute plan.

What to do

Check your polling place with your county Supervisor of Elections before you leave. Sites can change on short notice during the flooding. The Florida Division of Elections precinct lookup links to every county.
