U.S. Department of Justice

Since May 2025 the Justice Department has demanded full, unredacted voter rolls, including driver license and partial Social Security numbers, from at least 44 states and DC. It has sued 24 states and DC for refusing, plus Fulton County, Georgia for 2020 election records. DOJ cites the Civil Rights Act of 1960, which requires it to state the basis and purpose of a request. Dismissing the California case, the court said DOJ representations elsewhere painted a starkly different picture from its stated purpose.
