Threat Tracker

Actions that could interfere with counting or certifying the vote, each with its sources. Tracked through January 6, 2027.

What the levels mean

Level 1
Conditions forming. Claims, legal moves, or orders that could be used to justify interfering. Nothing has been stopped yet.
Level 2
Interference underway, process holding. It has happened in one or a few places (a seizure, a refusal to certify, a court order), but voting, counting, or certification can still go ahead on schedule.
Level 3
Process blocked. Widespread or disruptive enough that voting, counting, or certification can’t go ahead on schedule, or eligible voters are kept from voting.

CertificationMultiple statesVoting rights groups warn local officials may refuse to certify results to delay the conclusion of the November election. Protect Democracy says officials are likely to attempt refusal where they dislike the outcome. Current examples: Vickie Marquardt in Otero County, New Mexico, who refused in 2022 and will not rule out doing it again this fall, and Shasta County, California registrar Clint Curtis, who tried to stall the county declaration of the June primary before admitting his suspicions gave him no legal basis. Certification is a mandatory duty courts can compel. Open Source: Democracy Docket: how rogue counties could stall results and 2 moreLevel 1
