Developing Results and legitimacy

Refusal to certify results

Local or state officials refuse or delay certifying results to stall the end of an election. Certification is a mandatory duty that courts can compel, so the harm is delay and doubt, not a changed result.

Where it has been observed

  • New Mexico Developing
    • A local official says publicly they will not rule out refusing to certify. Otero County, New Mexico, where the county refused to certify in 2022
